A 52-year-old man has been arrested in Nyamagabe District for allegedly attempting to kill his son and cutting his son’s banana plantation.

Damascene Ntamazeze, a resident of Nyamirama Village in Ngoma Cell, Cyanika Sector had developed a disagreement with his 17-year old. The incident happened on June 24.

Ntamazeze allegedly missed his son, whom he had targeted with a machete and turned to his son’s banana plantation.

The angry father was restrained by residents before bringing down the whole plantation, after the boy raised an alarm while screaming for help, which attracted the attention of residents.

“Ntamazeze had given his son some domestic tasks and the latter refused, they quarreled, the enraged man grabbed a machete and chased his son to cut him but he managed to run fast and escaped. The father turned anger on his son’s plantation,” Chief Inspector of Police (CIP) Emmanuel Kayigi, the Southern region Police spokesperson, said.

“Residents, who responded to the alarm caused by the son, managed to successfully restrain Ntamazeze, but also called the Police; officers arrived shortly after and controlled the situation and took him into custody,” he added.

The spokesperson condemned such “criminal behavior” adding that “disrespecting children are not disciplined with machetes or paying with their blood.”

He thanked the residents for their immediate response and preventing the enraged father from causing harm to anyone.
